Do Olympic athletes pay taxes on their medals? Not exactly — but it’s a little more complicated than you’d think.
Every time the Olympics wrap up, there’s always that one question people quietly wonder about: after all the medals, celebrations, and spotlight… does the government take a cut?
It sounds harsh, right? Win gold, and then get a tax bill in the mail.
But here’s the reality: for most U.S. athletes, Olympic medals and the bonus money that comes with them are federally tax-free.
That wasn’t always the case, though.
It used to be different
Years ago, the Internal Revenue Service actually treated Olympic medals and prize money like regular income. So technically, if you won, you owed taxes on both the medal’s value and the bonus.
It was nicknamed the “victory tax,” and people hated it.
In 2016, that changed. A new law made medals and bonuses from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee exempt from federal taxes — as long as the athlete isn’t earning over $1 million a year.
For most Olympians, that means they get to keep every dollar of their medal bonus.
And yes, there is real money involved
The medal itself isn’t worth a fortune in raw materials. A gold medal isn’t solid gold — it’s mostly silver with a gold coating.
But the bonus money is where things add up:

That’s a meaningful reward, especially in sports where athletes aren’t earning millions outside the Olympics.
For athletes like Mikaela Shiffrin or rising stars like Alysa Liu, the medal bonus is just one part of their overall earnings — but it’s still a big deal.
But there’s a catch for the biggest stars
If an athlete becomes hugely successful financially — endorsements, sponsorships, book deals, all of that — and their income goes over $1 million, the tax exemption no longer applies.
That mostly affects global names like Michael Phelps or Simone Biles, who earn far more from endorsements than from medals themselves.
For them, taxes can enter the picture again.
Where they live matters, too
Even if federal taxes don’t apply, state taxes might.
Some states don’t have income tax at all, which makes things simple. But others do — and not all of them give Olympians the same tax break.
So two athletes who win the same medal could walk away with slightly different amounts depending on where they live and train.
The simple version
For most U.S. Olympians, winning a medal doesn’t come with a federal tax bill. They get the bonus money, the recognition, and the moment — without immediately owing the IRS.
But once endorsements, sponsorships, and state taxes enter the picture, things can get more complicated.
Still, the short answer holds: when athletes step onto the podium, the government usually isn’t standing there waiting to take a share.
